SPED 501 Special Education in Contemporary Society (3) This course is designed to provide exposure to the various areas of exceptionality, including the foundations of special education; individuals with intellectual disabilities; learning disabilities (including dyslexia and dyscalculia); attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; emotional or behavioral disorder; autism; speech, language, and communication impairment; physical disabilities, health disabilities, and related low incidence disabilities; and giftedness. Candidates are expected to identify the components of the Multi-tiered Support System (MTSS)/Support for Personalized Learning (SPL) process and its impact on students with special learning needs.
Successful completion of a 45-hour field experience aligned with licensure area being sought is required to receive a passing grade in the course. There must be at least one student with an IEP in the classroom for this course requirement.
A grade of C or better is required.
Note: This course IS NOT intended for MEd-SPED majors and may NOT be substituted for SPED 503.
