Department of Biology

Programs in the Department of Biology are designed to help prepare students for graduate school and careers in health care, biotechnology, and biology education. For each of these careers there is a need to understand the explanatory principles of biology and basic methods of biological investigation. The combination of core and elective courses facilitates the preparation of students entering post-baccalaureate degree programs or the job market.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology may choose an area of emphasis in (1) Biomedical Sciences; (2) Organismal and Field; or (3) Pre-Physician Assistant/Physical Therapy.

The Biomedical Sciences area of emphasis is designed for students planning to attend graduate school, veterinary school, or a human health professional school (such as medical, dental, optometry, physician assistant, chiropractic, or pharmacy). Students are also prepared for employment as a research technician.

The Organismal and Field area of emphasis is designed for students who are interested in field-oriented biology, such as environmental science (natural history, fish and game, national and state parks and refuges, etc.), or in other areas with more emphasis on organismal biology.

The Pre-Physician Assistant/Physical Therapy area of emphasis is designed to provide the needed rigor to produce strong candidates for professional school in Physician Assistant training or Physical Therapy.

The 3+1 Pre-Proffessional program may be taken by Concord University students who are seeking a Concord University Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and will matriculate at an accredited professional school (prior to completing their bachelor’s degree) in a program leading to one of the following degrees: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Dentistry, Doctor of Optometry, or Doctor of Pharmacy. Other professional schools will be considered on a case-by-case basis; students may petition the department chair and college dean for approval.

A minor in Biology is available for students who are majoring in other disciplines.

A student must earn a grade point average of 2.00 (C) in all courses required for the major or minor. Other courses taken in the Department will be included in the average.
