Geography

The objective of the geography program is to provide an understanding of the interrelationships between people and their cultural and physical environments. Factual information is combined with geographic theories to identify, through critical thinking, the spatial relationships found on the Earth’s surface. Attention is also given to the geographic tools and techniques used to analyze the natural and human patterns found on the Earth’s surface.

Students seeking the Bachelor of Science degree may earn a major or a minor in geography as outlined below. Note required grade average in Department of Social Sciences.

Program Description

Geospatial Science is a discipline that utilizes information technology to analyze and solve today’s environmental and social challenges, including those related to water resources, biodiversity and conservation, urban planning, disease, and regional conflicts.  Geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), remote sensing (e.g., satellite and drone technologies), and spatial statistics are common tools used in the collection, analysis, and visualization of spatial data.  The major in Geography with an emphasis in Geospatial Science will prepare students for various in-demand careers with government agencies, private businesses, and non-profit organizations.  Students will also acquire foundational knowledge and skills in preparation for advanced graduate study.

Core Requirements

The degree of Bachelor of Arts, with a major in geography, requires successful completion of 120 semester hours, including (1) the General Education Program  ; (2) the geography program listed below; and (3) a program of electives or a minor as worked out with the student’s adviser. Students are encouraged to enroll in modern language courses. Junior/Senior students may also complete a 3-to-6-hour internship subject to the approval of the geography faculty.  A minimum 2.00 GPA required for major.
