This degree qualifies graduates for certification to teach Spanish at the pre-kindergarten, elementary-school, middle-school and high-school levels. To increase job opportunities, an additional teaching content specialization is recommended. See Content Specializations.
Elective hours may be an appropriate course from another department (e.g. History, Geography), with prior approval of the Division, or independent study. Although HIST 101 and HIST 102 may not be used as electives, they are strongly recommended to those seeking Spanish certification.
*GEOG 250 : "Geography of Latin America" may be substituted for SPAN 260

Bachelor of Science in Education: Spanish
The degree of Bachelor of Science in Education in Spanish requires successful completion of at least 120 semester hours, including (1) the Program of General Studies , including ENGL 203 and ENGL 204 ; (2) the Professional Education component, and (3) the requirements associated with one of the Spanish certifications: Content Specializations
These programs allow teacher candidates to teach in specific subject areas. Teacher candidates must complete EDUC 318 , Content Area Reading, and special methods courses within their content specializations. Three hours of history must also be completed as part of the General Studies Program.
To increase employability, students should consider various combinations of teaching fields. The following pages list specific requirements to teach at various grade levels in the disciplines of Art, Biology, Business, Chemistry, English Lan- guage Arts, General Science, Health, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Social Studies and Special Education Multi-categorical 5-Adult. |
