CHEM 331 Organic Chemistry I (4) Prerequisites: CHEM 102 , CHEM 112 , and MATH 104 or MATH 107 (or equivalent proficiency). Introduction to the chemistry of carbon compounds, modern structural theory, stereochemistry, and spectroscopy. Includes chemical bonding, molecular geometry, and the properties, synthesis, and reactions (substitution, elimination, and radical mechanisms) of organic molecules with varied functional groups. Laboratory consists of fundamental experimental techniques in organic synthesis and purification on the microscale level, including the use and application of structural and optical spectroscopic techniques (IR, NMR, mass spectrometry). Students are expected to be able to identify and follow professionally recommended safety practices in the laboratory.
Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory.
