English - Literature Emphasis (BA)

Core Requirements:
Students pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree in English select one or more areas of emphasis: Literature, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and/or Journalism.
The degree of Bachelor of Arts with a major in English requires the successful completion of 120 semester hours, which must include all the following components:
- the General Education Program , including ENGL 203 and ENGL 204 .
- at least six hours of one modern language.
Note: Modern language courses may be used to fulfill certain General Education requirements.
- program of electives or a minor as worked out with the student's adviser
- program requirements for one or more areas of emphasis: Literature, Creative Writing, Professional Writing, and/or Journalism
Description
The Literature Emphasis degree program serves to prepare students for graduate work in fields such as literature, composition, English education, communication, journalism, and linguistics. The degree program further serves as an appropriate pre-professional major for a student who plans to seek a higher degree in a field such as law, medicine, ministry, or mental health, especially when combined with a second major or minor pertinent to that field (for example, history, political science, business, biology, philosophy, psychology, etc.).

Nine hours selected from the following (including at least one course from Shakespeare):

- ENGL 433A Advanced Mini-Courses, British Literature from Victorian to the Present (1)
- ENGL 434A Advanced Mini-Courses, American Literature from the Beginnings to the Civil War (1)
- ENGL 435A Advanced Mini-Courses, American Literature from the Civil War to the Present (1)
- ENGL 436A Advanced Mini-Courses, Anglophone Literature (1)
- ENGL 437A Advanced Mini-Courses, Literature in English Translation (1)
