SOC 339 Movies and U.S. Society (3) Movies as a form of popular culture. Analysis of films released in the early, mid, and late 20th century focusing on how movies both shape and are shaped by the socio-historical context in which they are created. Particular emphasis on the depiction of social problems during various historical eras, especially with regard to social class, race, ethnicity, gender, and politics. Technical and aesthetic aspects of filmmaking will be discussed only when they relate to the portrayal of social issues.
